Town, Location & Facts
Town of Kindersley Website
Kindersley is a vibrant and exciting town located in the heart of West Central Saskatchewan.
Settlement of the Kindersley area began in 1905 when the first homesteader arrived from Saskatoon by oxcart. But it was not until 1909, with the construction of the CN railway, that the Town began to grow rapidly.
Named in honor of Sir Robert Kindersley, a major shareholder in the Canadian National Railway, the town now boasts a population of over 4,500 and is a major business and recreation center for the area. Kindersley is home to many oil companies that have helped make oil a major industry in West Central Saskatchewan.
There is always something to do in Kindersley for the visitor or vacationer. The town has a wide range of recreational facilities all located within a short distance of the town center.
At the very center of these facilities is the West Central Events Center (WCEC). Constructed in 1993, the WCEC housed a 6 sheet curling rink and a skating rink, with the Exhibition stadium rink adjacent to it. The WCEC is home to the Kindersley Junior Klippers, a team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The Center is also host to many concerts and shows throughout the year.
Adjacent to the WCEC is the town's aquatic center with its six swimming lanes, two diving boards and a water slide. The aquatic center is open from March to October and provides the whole family with hours of fun.
The town's tennis courts and baseball diamonds are next to the aquatic center (See aerial photo). Berard and Flanagan fields have hosted a variety of Junior and Senior level provincial baseball tournaments. Berard Field, the semi-pro ball diamond, has 5,600 bleacher seating capacity and night lighting. It played host to the 1984 world Youth baseball tournament and continues to host the annual Canadian twilight Baseball Championships every July.
If you are a golfing enthusiast, then you will enjoy Kindersley's beautiful 9 hole grass greens golf course located just south of the town. It is complete with a pro shop and a licensed restaurant.
Located just opposite the golf course in the Regional Park campground. The campground has 42 fully serviced camp sites in a scenic setting and is the perfect place for picnicking and fishing.
For a quiet and tranquil place to relax, Kindersley has a number of parks which are perfect for casual strolls and picnicking. Baker Park and Water Tower Park are located in the heart of Kindersley.
A major annual attraction for the Kindersley area is the Annual Goose Festival held in late September. Come and enjoy the parade, dance, casino, charity auction, food Fest and more !!
If rodeos are of interest to you, then the Kindersley Indoor Rodeo is the event for you. It is held every June. The Rodeo is CCA sanctioned event and features bareback and saddle bronco riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and barrel racing. After the events, you can kick up your heels at the Saturday Night Dance.
Kindersley and area businesses display their services and products at the annual Trade Show: "EXHIBITAT." It is a two day event sponsored by the Kindersley chamber of Commerce and is held at the West Central Events Center (WCEC). It now attracts over 60 businesses and over 5000 visitors.
The Kindersley Plains Museum on the eastern edge of town contains many memories of life during the early years of Kindersley. Displays here recreate the atmosphere of yesteryear and include a kitchen, dining room, bedroom and classroom displays. A vintage collection of clothing dates from the early 1900's to the mid 1920's. The Museum also has displays of archaeological and Indian history of the area. The museum is also the home of the Kindersley tourist & Information booth.
Shopping abounds in both the Downtown area and the Kindersley Mall, where you can find national department and chain stores as well as excellent independent retailers. These businesses serve a radius of 90 km and a trading population of over 30,000. Located 200km east of Saskatoon and 415 km west of Calgary, Kindersley is " The Hub of West Central Saskatchewan."
